INTRODUCTION TO YOGA HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY

WHAT IS YOGA ? 

     Yoga is the union of body & mind, conscious with the subconscious, Jivatma(soul) and Parmatma(divine). It is the science of healthy and better living - physical, mental, moral, intllectual, and spiritual. It originates from the Sanskrit word 'Yuj' which means to join or come together or unite. so Yoga is the union of body,mind & soul.
 The practice of yoga is an art and science dedicated to creating union between body, mind and spirit. Its objective is to assist the practitioner in using the breath and body to foster an awareness of ourselves as individualized beings intimately connected to the unified whole of creation.

The origin of yoga is the begining of mankind,though the foundations of yoga philosophy were written down in The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, approximately 200 ADYoga gurus from India later introduced yoga to the west. In the 1980s, yoga became popular as a system of physical exercise across the Western world. But Yoga in Indian traditions, however, is more than physical exercise, it has a meditative and spiritual core.

The core of Patanjali's Yoga sutras an eight-limbed path that forms the structural framework for yoga practice. 
 The Eight limbs are :

  1. Yamas :  Universal morality
  2. Niyamas :  Personal observances
  3. Asanas :  Body postures
  4. Pranayama :  Breathing exercises, and control of prana
  5. Pratyahara :  Control of the senses
  6. Dharana :  Concentration and cultivating inner perceptual awareness
  7. Dhyana :  Devotion, Meditation on the Divine
  8. Samadhi :  Union with the Divine
It is to make life beautiful experience by maintaining harmony in Achara, Vichara, Ahar, Vihar. Yoga is living with Dharma(duty with discipline), Gyan(right knowledge), Vairagya(objective), Aishwarya(achievement and feedom from bondage).  The different branches of Yoga are known as Karma Yoga, Raj Yoga, Hath Yoga, Bhakti Yoga etc.

WHY YOGA ?
         It is observed in today'sworld that a major segment of society is unhappy,worried,full of stess and anxiety. It is also seen that there is no harmony between desires resources culmunating in sorrow. this happens despite of having all the prerequisites and when civilization is at its peak with the most refined technology available.
Modernization/urbanization takes us away from nature and people from all walks of life suffer from diseases.
Yoga is a Science,philisophy,technology,technique in the form of mental and physical descipline that can be followed to avoid, prevent, and restrict the problems and diseases.
